The best places to take family photos in your home
In-home family photography sessions are my all-time favourite. Not only do we capture beautiful photos of your kiddos and family, but we’re creating real-life memories. The photos that we create will tell the story of what everyday life was like for your family at this particular time. That lounge chair where you use to cuddle your babies on those long nights. How your kitchen used to look before the renovations that lasted FOREVER. Your once 7-year-old sitting for hours playing leggo where he now studies for his HSC. And your sweet cat who used to snuggle up the children’s bed but is no longer with you anymore.
As wonderful as they are, many of my clients find it hard to visualise what a photo shoot in their home will look like. No, you don’t need your entire home to be clean and immaculate (you can be certain mine isn’t!). I just love to stick to a few different spots in your home because as a mum with teenagers, I can see magical moments worth preserving and sharing with your children when they’re older. So here are my favourite locations to photograph at your in-home family photography session.
The Lounge Room or Living Room
This is the place you probably spend most of your time as a family. It’s the place for quiet time with the kids cuddled up on your lap as you watch the latest episode of Bluey, or maybe its the place of squeals and laughter as they build cushion forts while you get dinner ready. Hanging out on the lounge is definitely a place where family memories are made every day, and it’s the perfect place to create photo memories to freeze in time.
The Kids’ Bedrooms
I don’t know about your kids, but my kids’ bedrooms have changed in look about 4 times over their lifetime. From a baby’s nursery to a toddlers room, then the big bed arrives, and now the teen chill zone. Looking back on the different photos of their own rooms is definitely something that brings children a sense of joy and belonging, and it tells the story of what they were into at the time and what they loved to do.
The Master Bedroom
Hands up if your mornings with littles never involved a few extra visitors in your bed? I’ll confidently say not very many hands went up! ;) Having a big family dog pile in your bed is just part and parcel of being a parent. So why not document it. Not only that, but the master bed the perfect place for wrestles and tickles and lots of huge big smiles.
The Backyard
The great Aussie backyard is an essential part of childhood. Whether you have a pool, a patch of grass, a sandpit, swing set or cubby house, children get so excited to show you their favourite. Whenever I do an in-home family photography session, I’m always grabbed by the hand and dragged off so the kids can show me how high they swing, how big their sandcastles are, how big they can jump on the trampoline and of course introduce me to the family pet. If it excites your children now, it will definitely bring more joy in the years to come.
Time passes, children grow, and homes change decor or even location. It’s all part of your family story. But at this time in your lives, THIS is how your story reads, how it looks, how it feels. It might not seem like anything spectacular today, but in 10 or 20 years time this is the story you’ll be reminiscing over and sharing with grown up children and perhaps even your grandchildren. It will be your most favourite story ever.
If you’d love to document your family story to enjoy with your children both today and in the years to come, let’s chat. I’d love to hear more about your family and the special moments you’d love to freeze in time.
