Baking Christmas Cookies :: Family Christmas Traditions
Christmas time is filled with so many different kinds of traditions. Hanging Christmas stockings, putting up the tree, decorating the house and going to watch the local carols just to name a few. Then there’s the little traditions particular to your family, maybe what you leave out for Santa and the reindeer, or somewhere you go to show your gratitude each year. It’s a time of the year like no other for getting together and making memories.
Each year those moments can happen in such a hurry, a flurry of activity and cooking and wrapping and gatherings and before we know it, it’s Boxing Day and the countdown to New Years. So many moments and traditions happen in the lead up to Christmas that it can take intentionality to pause and savour all that’s happening.
Lifelong memories are so often hidden in the seemingly mundane little moments. What was supposed to be just baking cookies to give to the neighbours, can unknowingly become a special moment of bonding, laughter and silliness that you look back on in the years to come with a feeling of warmth in your heart.
Treasuring these memories is so important, because a year will come when we suggest making cookies with our little ones, to find out they’ve got plans with friends, or will be at their partners house this year. Don’t miss the fun of the messy moments worrying about the dishes, grab this moment (and the cookie dough) with both hands and roll out those memories.
Let’s resolve to be mindful this year of those moments as they happen. Let’s document the times of just being together, connecting and creating, both as a reminder to yourself and keepsake for your children to look back on and show to their kids in years to come when the same traditions are being enjoyed by the next generation.
