How to Enjoy Newborn Photos at Home with a Toddler
With a newborn baby and toddler in tow, anything you do can feel like a bit of a juggle. It would be a shame to miss out on marking this unique time, because of feeling overwhelmed about how to manage newborn photos at home with a toddler. This season of new family members and big sibling promotions is an exciting and never-to-be-repeated time, and you’ll be so glad you have it documented in the years to come.
So, if you’re in the newborn ‘daze’ and can’t get your head around how a photoshoot would go, but don’t want to miss the opportunity to record this special time as a family, never fear. Below are three things to know about my newborn photos at home with a toddler to put your mind at ease.
1. We’ll take turns
First, we won’t focus on everyone all the time. Toddler getting restless and needs to reset, no worries. We’ll get some shots of the baby with mum or dad. Baby needs a change or a break, no worries, toddler gets to the be the star of the show. When these moments arise, they’re no concern, we use them as opportunities to get other shots, whilst keeping it fun for all. I understand family life and I shoot many families, these sessions are designed to be fun and memorable for all the right reasons. One of the compliments I receive and regard most highly is, ‘that was way easier than I expected’. I don’t desire for expect an oscar-winning performance or smiles painted on. We will be flexible throughout the shoot, and believe it or not, sometimes the ‘distractions’ end up as the favourite images.
2. Leave it to me.
I have shot hundreds of families, and really, I’ve seen it all. We will have spoken before your session about the types of images you’re looking for and I know what looks good. Because I know the shots I am shooting for and it doesn’t take me long. Even with a restless toddler and a fussy, feeding or sleepy newborn, in a very short window of time, we can get just what we need for family memories that will warm your heart. I’ll be your guide on photo day, and we’ll have touch points before your session to discuss any other concerns or strategies around how to manage your newborn photos at home with a toddler.
3. Personality over perfection
It’s not about picture perfect! As a photographer and as a mother, I can tell you that the photos you’ll love the most, the ones you’ll look back on and hang around the house are the ones that are true to life. We don’t want glossy eyes and fake smiles. Lets use this time to celebrate who your family are, the expressions of your baby that will fade when they’re grown, the style of your toddler that you’ll miss one day. Having personality shine through will be what you treasure, so our goal is photos that celebrate your family as it is in this season of life. The togetherness, the giggles, the coziness and the snuggles.
