Family Photos at the Beach
For coast-loving families, there’s no better location for your family photoshoot than at the beach. For many Sydney families, the beach is a quintessential part of family life, whether that’s a special Summer holiday destination or a part of the weekly routine. Not only does a beach location provide a beautiful backdrop that looks great hanging on the wall, it’s also a perfect environment to have some family fun, and capture family photos at a spot you love to visit together.
For their third family photoshoot with me, the Kouts family picked their favourite beach in Sydney. If you love the idea of a family photoshoot at the beach, but have some concerns about making it work with all the sand, sun and the splash factor, scroll down for my top tips for family photos at the beach.
My top tips for family photos at the beach…
1. Barefoot is best.
When planning your outfits for family photos at the beach, leave shoes and socks out of the equation. Plan to be barefoot - it’s inevitable anyway and it looks the most natural. So mum, you have full permission to treat yourself to a a pedicure first, if that’s your thing!
2. An early morning, or late evening photoshoot offers the best light.
Due to the harsh sunlight on the coast with minimal shade, we’re going to want to plan these photos for sunrise or dusk. The softer light at these times of the day ensures the most flattering light on your beautiful family.
With many small kids happy to be up out of bed early, a morning photo session might be best for you. Some families like to pack breakfast to enjoy on the beach after photos and make a full day of it, while others like to plan a special breakfast at a nearby cafe as a treat and a way to keep the fun family memories rolling.
However, if you have older kids involved in weekend sports or other activities, an evening photo session might be better. Older kids love to stay up a bit later, and you might like to enjoy dinner out afterwards.
3. Pack spare clothes.
Just as you would any other time you head to the beach, be sure to pack towels, a change of clothes for each person and some fresh water to rinse off those sandy toes! If you are doing your photoshoot early in the morning, you may also want some clean snacks to keep the energy rolling. We’ll discuss all this and more at your planning appointment.
