How to Choose Photos for your Custom Wall Gallery

A lot of my clients tell me they would love to have a custom wall gallery in their home, but often they get stuck on what images to choose and how best to design it. After all, there’s usually quite a lot of images from their session that they love and it can be so hard to choose the ones to enjoy every day around the home.

That’s why I love to collaborate with my clients and work together to design a wall collection that suits their space and will be an absolute show-stopper in their home.

With a background in graphic design, there’s certain elements that I look for when grouping photos to be displayed together. There are certain design principles that work not only in the world of graphic design but also in photography.

When I sit down with my clients and we start designing a wall collection together, these are the options we start with as we select from their favourite photos.

1. Feature each child in separate prints

For families with multiple children, an easy layout choice is having a classic portrait of each child which highlights their personality.

2.Highlight different relationships

Another layout option is to highlight the different relations within your family. Start with a family image in the middle and surround it with a print of mum and the kids as well as dad and the kids. Or perhaps centre a family image and surround it with photos of each child. Another option could be a sibling photo surrounded with individual portraits.

3.Showcase different expressions

With children having so many amazing and cherished expressions, a popular and fun layout is having 3 or 4 images in a photobooth style.

4. Show different perspectives and viewpoints

To create a display with lost of visual interest choose photos that cover both wide angles and close-ups which help tell a more interesting story.

5. Group images from the same sequence

At one family photography session we might have three different locations. Group indoor photos together, or photos in the backyard together, or photos taken down by the river together. It tells a story and looks more cohesive as a custom design piece.

And in all these different ways to choose photographs for a wall collection, always look for balance. Balance in colour, negative space, and the types of relationships you highlight.
