Tips for Family Photos During Daylight Savings

Daylight savings provides us the perfect opportunity for a long afternoon to play, explore and make memories. With daylight stretching out into the evening, there’s a special block of time to spend together as a family, even after parents come home from work or after-school activities. I still remember long summer evenings and the memories we made when I was little, and I bet you can too! Just think about the memories your little ones will be reminiscing on in the years to come. Let's take the opportunity to create something that will last to help you and your kiddos remember these fun summer memories.

The best light for photos is in the evenings, anywhere from about 6-7.30pm. With little ones, that time of night could prove challenging, but here's a few tips to help keep your family photo experience fun....

Have an easy-going day

Try and schedule family photos on a day when you don't have a lot of activities on so your kiddos don't get worn out and exhausted. Saturdays can be perfect for this as parents may also have had the day off work and so you reduce that rushing feeling in the late afternoon, however choose a day that best suits your family’s routine.

Be mindful of meal times in your planning

We definitely don’t want family photos to conflict with you normal routine and what your children’s tummy’s may be expecting. There are a few ways to handle this with ease. For little toddlers, give them dinner before the photo session. Full bellies = happy babies. Then maybe save a treat, like some fresh fruit or ice cream until after the session. If the optimal photo session time is right on your little ones mealtime and you'd like to keep to their schedule, then let's incorporate a fun family picnic into your photos. Your little ones get fed, and you create some fun memories as well!

Pack the essentials for evening photo sessions

As we’ll likely be outdoors, bring along some insect repellent. I will have some on me, but as each child reacts to substances differently, it's best to use the products that you like for your family, and you know won't irritate your little ones.

Here in the Hawkesbury, we may have your photoshoot by the river if it suits your family. Depending on your kiddos and personal preference (which we will have talked about in our planning consultation) we could end up muddy or wet or both! So be sure to bring along a towel and a change of clothes for the drive home.

Also, if you think that your little one may fall asleep on the way home, feel free to bring their pyjamas along. You can pop them straight into bed when you get home and perhaps order in dinner for a stay-at-home date with hubby! Win-win!
