Christmas Gingerbread Playdough Recipe

If you’re like me, you love to bring the magic of Christmas into the whole month of December. Especially when your kids are young, there are so many Christmas kids activities to kick off the festivities. Below is my Gingerbread playdough recipe that’s the perfect Christmas activity for kids. Plus, it’s a win-win: making the playdough is an activity in itself, and then there’s the endless hours of play using different cookie cutters or building whatever your child’s imagination creates. Playdough is a great sensory activity, and great bonding for parents and kids. Enjoy bringing the magic this Christmas season and making memories with your kids that they’ll love and look forward to every year.

Christmas Gingerbread playdough recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 cup salt
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp cocoa
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup water

Instructions:

1. Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.

2. Combine the water and oil in a saucepan and gently heat on the stove.

3. Just before it comes to the boil, turn off the heat and stir in the dry ingredients. Mix well with a wooden spoon.

4. Let the mixture cool down, then knead the dough to combine all the ingredients properly and make soft.

Notes:
I’ve used the cocoa to make the playdough a brown colour.
If you don’t want ‘gingerbread’ playdough, just take out the ginger, cinnamon and cocoa and use food colouring of your choice.

When my kids were smaller, I used to add some calming essential oils to our playdough which I found to be a great stress-relieving activity for both my kids and myself as we sat there and played together!

This gingerbread playdough recipe was a bit hit at my recent Christmas photo event. The whole family got involved and we created some natural and candid Christmas photos that I’m sure will be treasured for years. To keep all my families protected from the transfer of germs, each child received a fresh ball of playdough that they could then take home (along with a real gingerbread cookie of course!) so they could continue this much-loved Christmas family activity.
